Yuliya Chernyshova is a fine artist whose work is deeply rooted in her lifelong relationship with the sea. She graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the age of 11, and since then has continued to develop a practice centered on observation, light, and movement.
Raised by the coast, Yuliya spent countless hours studying the shifting surface of the water—the rhythm of the waves, the variations of color, and the way light transforms the sea from moment to moment. She studies closely the way light passes through water, shaping depth, transparency, and motion beneath the surface. In addition to her artistic training, she also worked as a trainer with dolphins and seals, an experience that deepened her intuitive understanding of movement, behavior, and the fluid intelligence of water itself. This lived connection continues to inform her artistic vision.
In her work, she seeks to understand the “anatomy” of waves: how form, force, and light interact within constant motion. The sea becomes both subject and language, expressed through layered observations of movement, transparency, and chromatic change. Vibrant greens and deep blues emerge as essential elements in her visual vocabulary.
Working primarily with soft pastels and watercolors, she embraces the challenge of capturing something inherently transient. Each painting is an attempt to hold what cannot be held—the shifting, living surface of water in motion.
Her work reflects a dialogue between the power and fragility of the sea. It invites the viewer into a sensory experience of immersion, evoking light, color, and movement as a way of reconnecting with the natural rhythm of water.
For many years, Yuliya was a co-owner of Galerie Old Chelsea, where she played an active role in curating exhibitions and supporting fellow artists. She has participated in numerous art exhibitions across Sherbrooke, Magog, Ottawa, and Gatineau, showcasing her evocative seascapes to a wide audience.
